Civil 3D Idea of the Week: GPS-Like Technology to Layout Utilities (waterline especially)

Here’s an interesting Civil 3D Idea from Brian Chapman (Rank 9, Collaborator). Brian suggests that there be a way to automatically lay out utility lines, particularly water lines, based on simple rules. Some example rules he identifies include “holding min/max offsets from curb/right-of-way, etc, maximizing pipe lengths and using appropriate angles (5-degree, 11.25, 22.5, 45, 90).” Imagine being able to perhaps pick a start and end point and have the software automatically find the best path for your waterline? What if it used other rules to insert laterals and valves?
